About Harvin Moore:
Experience in Education

Harvin has actively volunteered in public education since the mid-1980’s when he first tutored in the East Harlem Tutorial Program while working in New York City. Upon returning to Houston in 1992, Harvin continued tutoring in public schools through Communities in Schools, Junior Achievement, and Kids Hope USA, which he still does on a weekly basis.

In 1995, Harvin began working with two educational entrepreneurs who were developing innovative programs within HISD. These two programs, KIPP and YES, are now among the most successful charter schools in America. Harvin served as a board member, Treasurer, and Vice Chairman of KIPP for six years as that organization grew from one school in Houston to five schools in Texas and 36 schools across America.

Harvin has also served on the board or advisory board of Teach for America – Houston, the Houston Teachers’ Institute, the Neuhaus Education Center, The Reading Institute for Teacher Excellence (RITE), and the Powell Foundation. Harvin worked as the Grant Director for Public Education at the Powell Foundation and conducted a detailed review of elementary reading programs in the HISD & completed teacher training in five different reading methodologies. Last spring Harvin taught a course to KIPP middle school students.

In 2002, Harvin served on the finance task force for Preschool for ALL, which has built a framework to improve access to quality preschool education in coordination with the Greater Houston Collaborative for Children and the Center for Houston’s Future. Harvin remains a member of that organization’s steering committee. Harvin has also organized and given presentations at numerous educational conferences on subjects including elementary reading programs, public school reform, and charter and alternative schools.

On the Houston School Board, Harvin serves as Assistant Secretary, Legislative Liason, and appointed member of the Board of the HISD Foundation. Harvin is quoted frequently on educational issues in the Houston Chronicle and other print, radio and television media outlets (See "In the News"). He also speaks regularly before educational and business audiences throughout Houston.
